About Laguna Humantay

This extremely photogenic lake is about 75 miles northwest of Cusco and just south of Machu Picchu. Humantay is comfortably situated between Humantay Mountain and Salkantay Mountain. In fact, it’s a popular hike when traversing the Salkantay Trail, an incredibly scenic alternative to the Inca Trail. Humantay’s fall runs along the Vilcabamba mountain range.

Lake Humantay is best known for its incredibly bright blue and green waters and its backdrop of snow-covered mountains. These fantastic colors come from the runoff.

History of Laguna Humantay

Let’s remember the history of what happened when the classic Inca Trail began to fill up with tourists. Knowing that the number of people entering the Inca Trail had exceeded the limit, it was necessary to find a way to access Machu Picchu on foot. Thus, in the first decade of the 21st century, a team led by two experienced mountain guides ventured to cross the Salkantay pass and the valleys behind to trace a trail. Thus, the Salkantay Trail became the alternative route to the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

Later, on the way to Machu Picchu, visitors learned from the locals about the existence of Laguna Humantay. They pointed out that there was a lake behind the mountains and that it was near the Salkantay base camp. As a result, like the 7-color mountain, visitors posted numerous photos on social media, making it a major tourist destination in the Cusco region and becoming the best full-day experience in Cusco.

How Was Laguna Humantay Formed?

When the glaciers began their final retreat less than 20,000 years ago, the ice masses carved and scraped the terrain as they slowly advanced, leaving “moraines.” The meltwater from the Humantay mountain glacier filled and continues to fill the depression between the lateral and terminal moraines, hence the origin of Humantay, named after the mentioned mountain.

Popularity of Laguna Humantay

Laguna Humantay is a relatively small lake, but what makes this body of water popular is that, on a good day, visitors can enjoy its incredible turquoise color. This lagoon is 100% glacial in origin.

Why Are the Waters of Humantay Turquoise?

One of the reasons for the turquoise color, not only of Laguna Humantay but of water bodies worldwide, is the presence of mineral particles carried by melted ice flowing down from snow-capped mountains. When these small mineral particles reach the lake’s waters, they never sink to the bottom. Additionally, the presence of microalgae (Microcystis aeruginosa and Oscillatoria) and the reflection of sunlight give the lagoon its turquoise color.
